Achieve wellbeing and stay healthy

Get well, regain health

Get the best value for your healthcare dollar

ONE: STAY HEALTHY

GOAL: Staying healthy and having a long life through prevention of accidents, healthy lifestyle and preventable illness, recognition and treatment of disease at an early stages

Disease prevention, screening, and early recognition:
Addressing health issues early and receiving the necessary care is one of the most effective ways to achieve optimal health. By making good lifestyle choices and following recommended prevention practices, we can make healthy choices in our lives. But we must take responsibility for maximizing our healthy habits -- exercising, not smoking, eating a healthy diet, sleeping well, avoiding unnecessary stress, etc.

Avoid injury:
Every year, there are too many Americans injured in avoidable accidents. You can do your part to identify risks to prevent injuries from occurring and take steps to minimize the severity of accidents that do happen.

Take action:

  • learn about recommended prevention and self-care activities for you and your family

  • activities to avoid injuries and accidents

  • complete your personal health inventory

  • complete your personal health risk assessment

  • develop an action plan to achieve your optimal health

  • work your action plan and assess your progress regularly

  • work with your healthcare provider

  • maintain a personal health record: keep a record of your health care information

  • follow screening and prevention recommendations

  • develop an action plan to achieve optimal health

  • work your action plan and assess your progress regularly

  • health care tools

TWO: GET WELL, REGAIN HEALTH

GOAL: Getting well, returning to a healthy state with minimal suffering and disruption

Acute illness: Acute illness is common. They can be quite bothersome and impact on your well being. Often the illness runs its course without intervention. Self-care to target symptoms is often sufficient. If you need to get input from your healthcare provider, preparing for the visit is helpful.

Trauma: Most people, regardless of how cautious they are, will experience physical or emotional trauma at some point in their lives. Treating the trauma when needed can prevent long term problems.

Chronic Illness: Unless you are extremely lucky, or have great genes, you will have a medical problem at some point. From minor acute illness such as an upper respiratory infection to life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, getting quality health and medical care will help you regain your function. But how do you know what is quality health care? How can you make sure you are getting the best care and the best value?

Take action:

  • Learn about symptoms and self-care for acute illnesses

  • Learn about resources to treat traumatic events

  • Learn about best practices for your medical conditions

  • Learn how to best work with your healthcare provider

  • Develop an action plan to achieve your optimal health

  • Work your action plan and assess your progress regularly

  • Access local and national resources for choosing the best healthcare providers

THREE: GET THE BEST VALUE

GOAL: Find the best quality for the lowest cost

Healthcare Insurance: Getting a good healthcare value means investing in coverage that offers the highest possible quality for the lowest possible cost. Finding quality coverage that is affordable is essential to protecting not only the health of individuals but the health of the U.S. financial system.

Medical Services: The cost of healthcare services is increasing significantly. Through co-pays, higher deductibles and other costs, Americans are paying a larger portion of their income to healthcare than ever before. Once you understand that the quality of health care does vary, it's clear that you can't take good quality care for granted.

Take action:

  • Find health insurance that offers the best value for you and your family

  • Work collaboratively with providers to get the healthcare services at the best value

  • Personal financial health checkup

  • Learn to use your healthcare insurance

  • Find resources for helping with healthcare insurance cost

  • Become involved in specific healthcare decisions through informed consent

  • Access local and national resources for choosing the best healthcare providers

  • Work with your employer to understand your healthcare benefit

  • Ask your union for responsive healthcare information

  • These resources can help you compare cost and quality
