Quality of Hospital Medical Care

The quality of medical care delivered by the hospital provides information about the quality of healthcare provided by the hospital. The information includes many aspects of the process of care, the outcome of care and complications that are the result of hospitalization. You will find aspirational goals for each variable, hospital best practice and tools to improve your outcomes if hospitalized.

More specifically, quality hospital healthcare is based on the latest evidence that is:

Safe: avoiding injuries to patients from the care that is intended to help them.

Effective: providing services based on scientific knowledge to all who could benefit and refraining from providing services to those not likely to benefit (avoiding underuse and overuse, respectively).

Patient-centered: providing care that is respectful of and responsive to individual patient preferences, needs, and values and ensuring that patient values guide all clinical decisions.

Timely: reducing waits and sometimes harmful delays for both those who receive and those who give care.

Efficient: avoiding waste, including waste of equipment, supplies, ideas, and energy.

Equitable: providing care that does not vary in quality because of personal characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, geographic location, and socioeconomic status.

Jeff Brady, M.D., AHRQ Patient Safety Portfolio lead, discusses the importance of the online Patient and Family Engagement in Hospital Quality and Safety, which gives hospitals evidence-based strategies to engage patients and their families in their care.
